Indian Town Being Invaded By Venomous Spiders, And Witch Doctors

June 12th, 2012 No comments

Raise your hand if you’ve seen the movie “Arachnophobia”.

Well, I have. Once.

My first time watching it was immediately my last.

It’s one of those movies that messes with your mind for the next several days. Your skin itches a little bit more throughout the day. You check your towel before drying off after a shower. Maybe you shake out your clothes before getting dressed because you never know. You never when at what point you’re going to run across one of those little buggers.

It’s just you. You’re minding your business. Your sitting down for lunch at your kitchen table to enjoy a ham sandwich with some ranch flavor Doritos and a Dr. Pepper. Unfortunately for you you didn’t see that little rascal hitching a ride on the underside of your whole grain bread. You’re just minding your business, no big deal, thinking about…”AHHH!!!”

“What the $#%& was that?!?”

You certainly don’t remember putting a needle on your sandwich. Just then you see that little eight-legged rascal making a break for the edge of the table. As soon as you get done putting two and two together you start to feel a little tingling in that same hand.

…You can make up the rest of the story on your own.

But you know what really sucked about watching arachnophobia? Seeing how entire armies of spiders would descend on the residents of a house or even a town. But that’s all Hollywood stuff right? ….Right??

Try telling that to the Indian town of Sadiya, located in the Assam state.

According to news reports Sadiya has been overrun by myriads of venomous spiders, leaving two people dead (Yes, dead!), and numerous others with severe flu-like symptoms forcing them to seek professional medical attention.

Locals report that the spiders have arrived in droves and that their behavior is extremely aggressive. On top of that, experts are saying that this particular spider is not even native to the area. They have tried to identify it as various species, including a tarantuala, a black wishbone spider and a funnel-web spider. The wishbone and funnel-web spiders are native to Australia, so somebody has some explaining to do.

Whatever the species, the town of Sadiya has a real spider problem on their hands.

Or, maybe the town of Sadiya actually has a witch doctor problem on their hands, considering many of the victims first went to witch doctors to have their wounds sliced open with razors and their blood drawn out and burnt.

“That could have also made them sick”, said the superintendent of the local hospital.

Bulwark recommends NOT seeking medical attention from this individual, or those from his "profession", to treat spider bites

You be the judge!

The Biggest Bug in the World Debate.

December 2nd, 2011 1 comment

In the past few days, there has been a sting of news releases about the World’s Biggest Bug, all started by this:

largest bug in the world -Giant Weta

Picture: Mark Moffett/Minden Pictures/Solent

This extremely rare and endangered insect was found by Mark Moffett. It took him 2 days to find this Giant Weta. She was found on Little Barrier Island, in New Zealand. They are no longer on the main land as they were cleared out by rats brought in by the Europeans. Mark, a bug lover from Colorado, was excited to find this rare cricket-like creature. He was even more honored when it was declared the Largest Insect on Record, according to weight. The wing span is 7 inches.

That is one HUGE bug, but is it the worlds Largest?

Here are some other contenders for the “World’s Largest Bug Award”

Goliath Beetle:

Golaith Beetle

The Goliath Beetle is often considered the largest bug on earth. It’s wings span reaches up to 10 inches. It actually sounds like a small toy helicopter in flight. And yes you can buy the Goliath Beetle framed like the picture above for $250.

Giant Moths:

Moths can be very large as well. From the White Witch Moth to the Atlas Moth, these mammoth moths have wing spans of up to 12 inches. This particular moth was photographed in Tulsa, OK by Bulwark Exterminating. It’s not quite the size of the mammoth moths, but it looked good on film.

Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing:

Wikipedia Author – Mark Pellegrini (Raul654)

The Queen Alexandra Birdwing is the largest butterfly in the world. The female’s wing span reaches just over 12 inches at 12.2. Interesting to note that this is yet another kingdom wherein the females rule, well at least based on size. It’s actually common for female insects to be larger than their male counterparts.

Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula

English: Theraphosa blondi - Goliath birdeater...

Tthe largest of the Arachnid family is the Theraphosa leblondi, known as the Bird Eating Tarantula. Yes it really does munch down a few birds and small rodents of unusual size. On record this spider is just over 11 inches, but others believe they grow to be 12 inches. But no need to fear, they are pretty harmless to humans. Go ahead and pick one up, if you dare.

Giant Walking Stick Insect:

If you are measuring on pure length then the Giant Walking Stick takes the cake. It can grow up to 20 inches.

So what of this Record Breaking Bug?

The claim remains that this Giant Weta is the largest on record by weight. At 71 grams (2.5 oz) they beat out all of their winged friends… UNLESS you believe wikipedia which states that Goliath Beetles weigh in from 80 to 100 grams. Can someone please put this debate to a close?

Scariest Spider? Vote Here.

We all know that spiders are scary even when it’s not Halloween. So, what do the 5 Scariest Spiders dress up like on Halloween to give you a real fright? Well we took a peek at this year’s festive costumes of the Black Widow Spider, the Brown Recluse Spider, the Tarantula, the Camel Spider, and the Desert Hairy Scorpion. But who wore it best? Which spider/arachnid is taking home the scariest spider prize? Who needs spider control?

Check it out and vote below:

Scariest Spiders

Black Widow cast herself as Lidsay Lohan (a repeat offender… referring to last year’s Halloween Treat) Sorry Scarlet Johansson but you won’t be playing the Black Widow tonight, but the shy Brown Recluse Spider may have found your cell phone. Sir Herman Cain gets props on his Godfather’s Pizza from the Tarantula. The military boys had enough influence on the Camel Spider that Ron Paul gets the Camel Spider vote. And well, the Desert Hairy Scorpion is feared enough so digging out a scary costume meant going for the gold in fear force names, Chuck Norris.
