Worst Allergy Cities In The Country

April 4th, 2013 No comments

Our Bulwark headquarters may be in Mesa, AZ, but we have a vested interest in the stories and happenings in all the cities across the country that we service. Earlier this week the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America released its Spring Allergy Capitals list. All cities are ranked across America, but only the top 100 are published. Cities are ranked using factors such as pollen ratios, medication consumption and certified allergists per capita.

According to the results, Jackson, MS will be the most challenging city to live with allergies this spring season. Fortunately, we don’t service in Mississippi.

Knoxville, TV. Ranked #2 worst allergic city in the country.

However, we do service #2 and #3, Knoxville and Chattanooga, respectively. The report indicates that Red Cedar, Hackberry, Elm and Willow trees are major contributing factors to nearby pollination. These two cities are new to the Bulwark family as we officially began servicing customers in those areas as of April 1, 2013. Just in time for the allergy season!

From there, we jump to #21 with Tulsa, OK. And next is San Antonio at #24.

Rounding out the top 50 are both Charlotte and Greensboro, NC at #40 and #42, respectively.

At #55, we come back across the country to our most westward branch in the company, Las Vegas, NV. Houston follows close behind at #58 before we hop back across the state of Texas to Austin at #64.

Our Atlanta family ranks in at #72, just ahead of our mother-ship branch in Phoenix. Bulwark World Headquarters no-so-proudly comes across the line at #75. Yeah us!

Our last representing city is Raleigh, NC, who ranks in at #87.

The Top 10 Cities With Allergies

1. Jackson, MS

2. Knoxville, TN

3. Chattanooga, TN

4. McAllen, TX

5. Louisville, KY

6. Wichita, KS

7. Dayton, OH

8. Memphis, TN

9. Oklahoma City, OK

10. Baton Rouge, LA

There are lots of contributing ingredients that mix together for a wonderful serving of allergy season. The reports put out by the AAFA strongly suggests that local vegetation is the main reason these cities suffer the allergenic seasons that they do. That may in large part be true, but there are steps that you, the resident, can take to lower your own risk in your home to reduce the chance of suffering a sniffling and sneezy Spring.

Keep your filters up to date. And that means all the air filters that you come across during the day. Even the best air filters for the home only last up to three months, so make sure you are setting a reminder on your calendar to change them on time. Also, the air filters in your vehicles should be changed regularly according to the manufacturers recommendation.

It’s also worthy to note that spending just a few more dollars on any of those filters mentioned above greatly increases the quality, so if you have a few extra bucks, it might be worth spending.

Keep your carpets clean. Carpets are the #1 favorite resting spot for dust, pollen and other airborne imperfections. Set up a schedule to vacuum your home every so many days, and stick to it.

We’re obviously bias, but having regular pest control treatments will also help to lower the pollen and bacteria that enter the home. Insects such as crickets and roaches leave behind their droppings just about everywhere they go. Most insects also leave behind the shell of their exoskeletons during a process knowing as molting. The presence of bio-matter around the home will surely increase the allergen count.

Spring means Spiders – Get Spider Control

Awe Spring, Life is Buzzing, the Birds and the Bees… oh and don’t forget the spiders.

The Blue Skies of Spring Bring Spiderlings

Raleigh Spider Control

As the beautiful blue skies of spring turn to sunny summer our minds turn to watermelons, swimming pools, and heat waves. Unfortunately as we contemplate what drink we want to have poolside, the bugs around our house are contemplating how to grab a drink from our sinksides. With the AC turned on pumping deliciously cool air throughout our own personal compounds we create a great escape from the heat for the wondering insects on the outside. In fact it may feel as if these creepy crawlers are appearing from thin air. But it’s actually that cool moist air seeping out of our homes that draws the pests in. The hollowed walls of your home may have never seen an attack from such a sneaky adversary, but sure enough here they are. Sure you’ve seen the occasional spider or cricket but now it’s like your house is their own personal oasis.

This is a problem all too common in the insect world. Over the years I’ve had many conversations with people wondering how this could be, and what is going on. Well let’s take a conversation I had recently with a lady, I’ll call her Lisa.

Lisa: Can you help me I’m seeing spiders?

Me: Absolutely, tell me a little about the problem.

Lisa: Well we moved into the house about a year ago and didn’t have any problems and now just seem to see them everywhere. I’m not seeing any webs but they are crawling all over the house. I don’t know what is going on. We are clean people and don’t leave food out. It makes no sense.

Mating pair of Argiope appensa garden spiders ...

Mating pair of Argiope appensa garden spiders in Kauanakai, Hawaii (island of Molokai). A batch of spiderlings hatched from an egg sac that already existed in the female's web, about two weeks later. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This is a scenario that plays itself out in homes all over the nation around this time of year. Spiders typically are solitary creatures that like to live by themselves hunting and trapping their food with webs and various other methods. However, every year the call of nature arrives and the need to mate hits spiders everywhere. The mating really isn’t the problem though…it’s the aftermath of the mating. Being the solo creatures that they are, spiders decide that if they are going to mate they are going to make it worth their while. So with each egg sac they lay they make sure it is full with 200-300 baby spiders. The egg sac itself doesn’t look like much, just a small white little fluffy ball of web, but it sure does pack a punch. As those eggs mature and eventually hatch these hundreds of baby spiders quickly become the massive infestation you never knew you had. The spiderlings begin ballooning and spreading. And literally hundreds of new spiders are now lurking about. All from one small white egg sac. Add three, four, or five of these eggs sacs and hundreds become thousands.

That’s why we exterminators are here; to fix infestations as they occur or even better stop them before they happen. Bulwark (a defensive barrier) is our name, and protecting homes is our game. To see how we can best help you, give us a call.

My trip to Raliegh NC – Bulwark Pest Control Guy

November 22nd, 2011 No comments

Just a couple of fun highlights from my trip to Raleigh, NC for the internet summit.

The 100 Mile Race

Flying out of Phoenix Sky Harbor, I spoke with a man that told me he had just run 100 miles. I thought he was being sarcastic. Nope. He was in a 100 mile race. He says that they call them UltraMarathons. He told me that he fly in just for the race and was leaving. He’s not a professional, and says that there are very few professionals in Ultramarathons. His run was 6 loops. You drop a bag with food and minimum supplies about the half way point. And he finished his 100 mile run in just over 26 hours. The winner finished in about 17.5 hours.

Never Been on the Internet

From Baltimore to Raleigh I sat next to a couple that were retired and living in Florida. They were upwards of 70 years old and had been retired for less than a year. I asked if they stayed in touch with their family in New York via Facebook. Nope. They have NEVER been on the internet. NEVER. They have never owned a home computer. What about text messaging? Nope. She told me that she just got,… “what is it called, you know a phone that you take out of your home.” … I took a guess, “A cell phone?”. She had her first cell phone in her hand about 5 months ago. Still no text messaging, but they got one just for safety reasons.

North Carolina BBQ

North Carolina has it’s own unique BBQ. They claim it to the “REAL BBQ”. Interestingly they even have two different types, an East and West NC BBQ. It’s vinegar based. The West BBQ adds a little molasses to the vinegar. Definitely different, and I kinda liked how the vinegar brought out the flavor of the meat a little more. Not bad at all. Sadly I couldn’t think of a single cuisine unique to Arizona, cactus fries maybe???
