The Soldier Beetle

The Soldier beetle (also known as leatherwing) is global in it’s distribution. Highly desired by gardeners as a natural exterminator of several pest insects, adult Soldier beetles are especially proficient predators of aphids.

Interesting Fact: One common British species is bright red, reminding people of the red coats of soldiers, hence the name Soldier beetle.

This beneficial insect will supplement it’s pest insect diet with nectar and pollen, and as a result; unintentionally acts as a minor pollinator. With that being said, eager homeowners can introduce nectar and pollen producing plants, to encourage the growth and development; of a strong Soldier beetle population.
