As a general rule, bats are not very popular with people, regardless of any benefits the pest management experts say they provide. Although movies and television have spent decades using bats to frighten audiences, people should re-think their negative feelings toward the bat population across America, and consider that of the 1200 recognized species of bats; only three actually feed on blood. And those three species, very rarely have an encounter with humans. Furthermore, any danger that is associated with a bat bite, is attributed to the potential for the transmission of disease; such as rabies. With that being said, the benefits that bats consistently offer to farmers and families across America, definitely overshadows any risk associated; with an unlikely bite or attack.

According to a new study, male Crickets have shown signs of chivalry to their female partners. In a situation of danger, males will allow the female to enter the burrow first, even if there isn’t enough room for him. Putting his life in danger for the female, often times allows him to mate with the female more and more often then he would have before. Although crickets aren’t very intelligent, it is believed to be an instinctive trait among them. What was long thought to be a human-only trait has now been found in field crickets. Who knows, maybe other creatures and critters have this trait as well, we just haven’t found them yet.
His influence has touched so many industries, including our own pest control industry. His impact will be felt in future pest control companies as well.

By mutating the goats genes, the goat will produce milk with the same protein in the milk. The Utah professor then takes these proteins, isolates them, mimics the spider’s weave, and spins a spider like silk.

If you live in most of the southwest, you might be surprised to hear that the West Nile Virus has just been found in Los Angeles County. Unfortunately, mosquitoes with the West Nile Virus have been plaguing the Phoenix area for years. According to the Daily Breeze, Mosquitos carrying the West Nile Virus have been found at Torrance’s Madrona Marsh nature Preserve. Two men recently tested positive for the virus and several dead birds were found to have the virus.
According to the article, the reports are more frequent than normal and the outbreak is considered an epidemic since there have been more reports this year than there have been since the virus outbreak in 2004. The outbreak might be due to an especially wet winter followed by a warm summer.
Although the virus can be deadly to animals, it is usually not fatal to humans. Those who are in poor health or the elderly can be at risk but for most, the virus only causes flu-like symptoms. Park officials are getting the word out that the virus has been found in the area and they are doing what they can to kill many of the mosquitoes; mainly cutting back the vegetation and eliminating standing water.

Males simply stab females in the side with their reproductive organ and inject their sperm, which makes its way to her eggs. Females recover from one mating, but several matings increase the chance of infection and death. Female bed bugs may try to get away from groups of males and go off and hide alone to avoid being stabbed to death. This bodes poorly for infestation, as females will hide in order to prevent death, and also lay eggs in quiet, hidden locations. Scorpion Stinger... Scorpions Stings. Scorions don't Bite. No Scorpion Bites.
A Mexican made anti-venom has been making its appearance in Arizona hospitals for the past few years. Part of the clinical study on the anti-venom released data in regards to the effectiveness of the anti-venom in May of 2009 “Antivenom for Critically Ill Children with Neurotoxicity from Scorpion Stings”. The studies carried out in Arizona have proven very positive. The report says that very few had any allergic reactions. The studies have seen a 98% success rate through out the clinicals. The data released in 2009 showed a 100% recovery rate within 4 hours of receiving the anti-venom, opposed to the placebo only having 1 out of 7 recover within 4 hours measured by the plasma venom.

Most individuals stung from scorpions will not suffer an allergic reaction. The human body can metabolize the neurotoxin injected by the Arizona Bark Scorpions under normal conditions. Seeing a child’s eyes roll back into their heads and their bodies begin convulsing is a horrific scene no parent wishes to endure.
Further, with the FDA approval, the anti-venom should become more available. Drug companies can now begin to officially supply the anti-venom and not worry about producing a medicine that may never make it to market. Knowing that the antidote is readily available will ease the sleeping of a lot of scorpion troubled homes.
Regular service around the exterior of a home is the first and foremost step in scorpion control.
