I forgot to mention, if you have pictures hanging on the walls, you need to take them down. Leave them off the walls if you can until your problem is cleared up, if not you need to clean them. I spray the backs of them with lysol. You will also need to spray your electronics with lysol or use the electronics wipes. They do like and will hide out in your electronics - don't drown your electronics in lysol - you don't want to ruin anything. Also, for the pets, I lint roller and wash their bedding often. Also I've soaked the pets toys and run them through the wash. Don't forget to spray your shoes. Luckily we don't have them in the car - yet, but we both work from home and don't have to drive too often or long distances. Seems like the best defense is the more often cleaning, vacuuming, lint roller - letting them come to you kind of method. I'm sorry for the double post above, I don't know how to delete one of them. Thank you for letting me post here, getting all of this off my chest is super helpful.

Our problem started at the end of Jan. this year. I'm a super clean, organized, sane person with a science degree - so of course this freaked me out. I've never seen the lint balls or specs move except in the cats water dishes. I've touched the white one with a fingernail and it pops away. I've unraveled the black strings, lint balls and they are this semi-reflective thin, strong string. Almost reminds me of a cassette tape material but black sometimes with smaller red and/or blue strings. The 1st month and a half I tried all the remedies recommended on the birdmite.org site. Bagged up all pillows and rugs, threw out a huge area rug, took down all curtains, took down the fabric shower curtain, put moth balls in the closets, washed everything in borax and hot water, started using bounce dryer sheets in the dryer, wrapped the sofas and bed in plastic after treating it, borax and baking soda'd the carpets, steamed everything-walls ceilings, sprayed everything (including ceilings) with the permethrin 10% and precor mix! Yes it helped for a few days, but I could still feel them - sprayed again! Still felt them, sprayed again-still not gone! I even took my sofa cushion covers off and soaked them in the borax as well as soaking the cushions themselves in hot water and borax - it was gross, all of these black specs came out. I don't recommend it unless you have a large tub - my cushions were a little too big for my standard size tub and they got super heavy plus it took forever to dry and after all of that, I could still feel them! My B-friend believes I'm just having a sensitive skin issue and I'm obsessed with looking at everything under a microscope. Perhaps, but at that point I just wanted to know what was crawling and biting on me, in hopes to figure out what it was in order to get rid of them. Took the cats to the vet-no fleas-no signs of fleas, plus we treat them. With 4 cats and 1 BF I have to clean everyday so yes, when you have stuff crawling in your hair, ears, nose, privates, etc and you get the little white specs in your hair, clothes, panties or see the floating lint when there shouldn't be any you want it to stop, plus it is very stressful and exhausting! I worry about my pets. So it's very important that I eradicate them asap!

I'm convinced it's a combination of springtails and birdmites (or some mite, pepper/predatory) due to the empty birds nest right outside our patio screen door plus all of the characteristics of where they crawl on your body and what seems to deter them line up with the bird mites. The day after cutting down and removing the limb with the birds nest there were thousands of tiny black dots and orange tear drop shaped shell like things all over the back patio, plants and window sills. Still have no clue what they are. I've visited all of the internet bug/pest sites, forums. Read so many horror stories - searching/researching. Yes I even contacted a recommended birdmite specialist through the birdmite.org website and he told me what to look for and some things to do but there was still no guarantee and I didn't like the sound of all of the harsh chemicals.

Seems like it's best to alternate whatever you find that does work for you. The thing I like best is the STICKY LINT ROLLERS! Go ahead roll your walls and you will be shocked at how much lint, specs and little bright green cocoon type things, you get on you sticky paper. I also found these flesh colored, semi-soft web like things on the underside of my archway to the kitchen. Again I didn't see anything moving. I tried to do the ceiling but we do have popcorn ceilings, luckily they are the kind that is plastered or painted over so it doesn't just come down when you brush/wash it. I also keep a lint roller with me, if i feel something on me, I roller it up.

HOT WATER & 20 MULE TEAM BORAX: does work well, however it does leave a residue on everything and you don't want to get it on your electronics. I did take a paint roller and dipped it into a strong mixture of the borax/hot water and rolled the ceilings - it helps A LOT!

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH: we bought it from Home Depot, it was about 10 bucks for a 4lb bag and it has lasted a long time. I put it in an old baby powder bottle, you can use it as a duster. You need to make sure to dust in a WELL ventilated area ESPECIALLY IF PETS are around! I open a window and don't allow the pets in that room until the dust settles just in case. For the sofas, I dust it on, open the cushion covers and dust it in, wrap sofa in plastic - completely! Be sure to move sofas/furniture away from walls. Mattress - I put on a vinyl glove to protect my hands from the dryness of the D. Earth - take a spoon and put the D. Earth in EVERY seam of your mattress. I make it thick so that I can't even see the seams any longer. Move bed away from walls. I did have the mattress wrapped in plastic, it was too difficult for me to sleep on it so now I just double up the bottom sheet, works fine. This also allows me to vacuum and retreat the mattress once a week. I also sprinkle a little D. Earth in between the sheets and blankets and sleep in it. It doesn't bother me - just do a VERY little bit - too much is suffocating. But it does help - no more biting or crawling at night. Wait two days and go lint roller your sheets and pillows. BASEBOARDS: our tile and grout lines go under the baseboards, so again with a gloved hand I applied the D. Earth to EVERY baseboard crack and crevice and on top of all door frames that I could find. I also put the D. Earth around the outside of the house and on the window sills and sprayed the fascia, overhang and walls with the hot water and borax mix. Do your research on the D. Earth to make sure you buy the organic/safe kind.

VACUUM: at 1st every day, now it's every other day or every two days, just depends on what I have time to do. I've also tried vacuuming the ceiling and walls. If I don't get to it. I do lint roller the area around me and the entire bathroom prior to showering.

I also thought ok well if I can't see them, then I am going to stop making myself crazy and let them come to me and then I will lint roller or lysol bomb their asses! It's really working a lot better than me trying to chase them down. So I re-wrapped the sofa, keep the mattress covered in D. Earth. Keep my clothes in plastic bags, still have the curtains, pillows and rugs all in bags.

CLEAN FLOORS: I know that a lot of people recommend the borax and hot water for the mopping of floors but I don't do that. Due to the cats. I have the hand held Shark Steamer and use that. Yes I am bent over or on hands and knees scrubbing the floor. The stand up Steamers just don't put out the amount of steam that my hand held on does. So do what works for you.

BAGS: If you have or can invest in space bags - use them, bag it all up. Luckily we had some, so I've bagged what a can and I limit the laundry that I wear. New laundry goes in a thick plastic bag. If you can get the thick lawn ones from Home Depot, they will last the longest. I throw a couple of the dryer sheets in them and what I don't wear I put some moth balls in them

BODY: as for my body, at 1st I showered at least twice a day. I take my clothes off and put them in the laundry hamper asap, and new clothes in a plastic shopping bag to take into the bath with me. We don't leave any towels/rugs in the bathroom right now. Scrubbing with a kitchen scouring pad - it was horrible. Then I found these white body scrubbing bath gloves, you can buy them anywhere, Publix, Walgreens, Walmart in the bath department and they are only about 2 bucks. I just use dove soap. I have heard of people using sulfur and antibacterial soaps too. I feel like I get them off just fine with the dove soap. I also mix this Hollywood Beauty Tea Tree Oil scalp treatment in with my shampoo, feels like I get them off my scalp a lot better. If you have them bad, just put the oil in your hair and let it soak in - it's a scalp treatment so it's safe and has other oils in it. It will make your hair oily but you can always shampoo it out. I then leave conditioner on my head and scrub EVERYTHING! don't for get all around your toenails, between the toes, ears, all private areas, armpits, etc. After shower - at 1st I tried the ground mustard mixed with lotion - gross - just don't do it, it was a remedy on a site, it's just not worth it. I've just tried to use what I already had. Petroleum jelly mixed with tea tree oil. Be careful though, I've read that tea tree oil is toxic to cats plus I don't care for the smell and yes it does burn the anus and vagina areas - but it does keep the bugs away - for a bit. I've also used the orange oil after eating an orange - it does help until the smell of the oil goes away. It's just too time consuming. Some on here suggested the sanitizing hand gel - it seems to work really well. I also like the Gold Bond lotions and I've also used the vitamin E oil all over. Again just stuff I've had. Anything seems to work and I'm sure some things will work better for some than others. I'm open to any suggestion. Now that it's getting better, I've just been using the gold bond lotion and the skin so soft lotion from avon plus now the hand sanitize gel.

Don't give up, don't get lazy about the cleaning. Put things away that you aren't/don't have to use for a while until you get rid of them. If you live with someone that is not helping you or someone that doesn't believe you then you can try moving out for about two weeks. That's how long the professional exterminator said it would take for the mites to hunt down the non-believer. lol, he was obviously being sarcastic. Here's what I asked my BF, how likely is it that I've just suddenly created this problem? How is it that everything that I do/act is exactly the same except for this one thing? That if I were going to "create" some issue, how would I have come up with this kind of a problem? Regardless of his lack of support, respect, help I keep chugging along. So don't give up, don't give up hope. I feel for anyone going through this nightmare.

I also found these flesh looking semi-soft web like things on the underside of my archway to the kitchen.

I put it in an old baby power bottle, you can use it as a duster. I make it think so that I can't even see the seams any longer.

Our problem started at the end of Jan. this year. I’m a super clean, organized, sane person with a science degree – so of course this freaked me out. I’ve never seen the lint balls or specs move except in the cats water dishes. I’ve touched the white one with a fingernail and it pops away. I’ve unraveled the black strings, lint balls and they are this semi-reflective thin, strong string. Almost reminds me of a cassette tape material but black sometimes with smaller red and/or blue strings. The 1st month and a half I tried all the remedies recommended on the birdmite.org site. Bagged up all pillows and rugs, threw out a huge area rug, took down all curtains, took down the fabric shower curtain, put moth balls in the closets, washed everything in borax and hot water, started using bounce dryer sheets in the dryer, wrapped the sofas and bed in plastic after treating it, borax and baking soda’d the carpets, steamed everything-walls ceilings, sprayed everything (including ceilings) with the permethrin 10% and precor mix! Yes it helped for a few days, but I could still feel them – sprayed again! Still felt them, sprayed again-still not gone! I even took my sofa cushion covers off and soaked them in the borax as well as soaking the cushions themselves in hot water and borax – it was gross, all of these black specs came out. I don’t recommend it unless you have a large tub – my cushions were a little too big for my standard size tub and they got super heavy plus it took forever to dry and after all of that, I could still feel them! My B-friend believes I’m just having a sensitive skin issue and I’m obsessed with looking at everything under a microscope. Perhaps, but at that point I just wanted to know what was crawling and biting on me, in hopes to figure out what it was in order to get rid of them. Took the cats to the vet-no fleas-no signs of fleas, plus we treat them. I have been dealing with this for two years with two moves in two years. It does not seem to go away entirely but, can be controlled with a lot of daily routine. But, I understand the frustration............ I have been doing some research and the only logical explanation for this recent outbreak is that it is coming on the fibers of the clothes that the US imports from over seas. It could be from any one of the countries we import from, most likely the more economically challenge countries with less protocol laws on exporting. The problem though lyes within US customs and there protocols with examinations of these items.
If NO ONE believes this is an actual bug, parasite, or whatever this is.
How can anyone start looking for how they came to arrive here in the US and for the others who are experiencing this on going nightmare around the globe. So, if no one is looking into the how and why. Than were along way away from HOW TO stop.

Please know this is one persons best guess. I have no actual evidence for anyone to believe this is a fact. Again, just a guess.......

<a href="#comment-8575" rel="nofollow">@Susan </a>
Susan, I am so sorry for the way you are feeling. I know it can get so crazy discouraging, to say the least. My doctor doesn't beleive me....they try to diagnose me crazy. Little do they pay attention to what i do for a living. I have 3 children and they have the same issues i have but I seem to be much more extreme. My relationship is falling to peeices because I work so hard daily to scrub walls, dust, vacume, and clean clean clean. I wash bedding daily and shower often. I spend a lot of money on cleaning supplies for house and body. No one understands what I'm going though because they are not going through it. I've cried many night sense this hell has begun and it has taken all i have to get through some days. I am 28 as of last week and this has been going on sense last October. My one year old daughter cries and rips her hair out, shes always itching.....it's so hard. I really can honestly say I can feel you here. Don't give up though because we will find the answers we need. I have been taking some body cleansers from the local "Health Hut" and I wash wish charcoal-tar soap. I use tea tre shampoo and conditioner I bought from a hair saloon and put a drop of tea tree oil in them and lavender. I put tea tree oil in baby oil and i rub that on my body often. These few things help so much its unbelievable. I notice if I do not do my ocd type of cleaning daily i feel them biting me though. I've found the trick is to get though day by day and JOURNAL your experience because this will come out in the open and we are the dummies they used to test the tolerance of these little assholes.

I'm very worried for you as I've been in your shoes and often am there again and again. I think we all need to stick together

ALSO, another thing I've noticed and i'm not sure anyone else has mentioned. these things get deep under your toe nails and finger nails. if you get them out, you will likely find relief because I believe they are laying eggs under there and those eggs are being digested. No joke, when I realized they were my cuticles and they were under my nails and toes I shit you not I stuck a cheap dollar pair of tweezers under there and i pulled them out. the relief i found soon after was great. Also, I use st ives (walmart) facial scrub. The beads in it bring these things out of your pores on you face and i'm sure the rest of your body as well. I wax my legs and woman parts because they attach to the hair pores. They literally pull out with the hair. It hurts but I'm telling you, it's worth the relief.

I know what you mean - I've throwm out my entire wardrobe , hired a professional exterminator, launder and buy new clothes constantly, shiower incessentantly, and I can't get rid of them!!! My life is being ruined - and everyone thinks I am imagining things!!! The exterminator said it's just lint. If so, then why am I getting bit and itched to death by lint?!? Maybe the only solution is moving and starting all over? I do laundry, see nothing and all of a sudden - like magic - thes lint insects appear. I am losing sleep and at my wits end!! After many years in law enforcement, I can tell you I would rather face down a man with a loaded gun than deal with this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(sorry for the typos - in a rush)

Hello to all my fellow sufferers - I HAVE FOUND A CURE!! I read through every one of your heartbreaking & Oh so familiar stories a few months ago, while desperately trying to solve my own nightmare with these revolting, sneaky critters. I have shared your hell & I'm back soully.to share my cure with you. I pray that every one of you gets to feel the elation & relief that this discovery has given to my whole family. I 1st became aware of our infestation about 4 months ago & I was sure that someone had given me scabies, due to the matching symptoms. I guess it still could be, as the bugs do seem to change appearance, in our case anyway. I have found minute dark coloured mites, as well as the evil white fluff/lint/dust bugs all over the place. I discovered the white ones, after seeing one disappear into my stomach, whilst in the bathroom & then began noticing them all over the house & our belongings, to my horror. I then gradually became paranoid about every speck I saw & obssessive with cleaning, capturing suspects to study with my magnifying glass. At this point, my family became split down the middle over my suspiscions, with my Husband & 2 Daughters telling me I was crazy & going into denial. They had to accept that I had scabies, as my skin was horrific. This was deeply upsetting & I hovvered between anger, frustration & wondering if they were right about my state of mind. They made it so hard for me to keep on top of the huge increase in housework, which I had to deal with alone & to be honest, i'm still pretty angry over their attitude, as i'm sure you can relate. I was heavily infested & know now that I must have been mite hostess way longer than I knew, with no idea where I picked them up. Permethrin & Ivermectin didn't help, so I then worked my way thru every idea I could find online. Some helped a little, most not at all & in desperation, I began to work my way thru anything I could find around the house. That's how I found my cure! My Husband had been given a veterinary product (made for horses) by his Mother, following a football injury, as she swears by it for aches & pains. I decided to give it a try, thinking what the hey & applied some of the liquid to my leg with a cotton wool pad. It smelled very strong & instantly warmed up on my skin. Within seconds, the mites/bugs began popping out of my skin, where they turned white, like balled up lint bugs & were obviously dead! After so many failures , I was stunned but I kept going & collected so many that I had to put them in a jar. Then I cried my eyes out in thanks & relief! I have now treated myself all over, with amazing results & I also use a diluted form in a spay bottle to treat the house, plus clothes washing etc. It acts immediately & we are now cured! I am in the UK but I now buy this product online, so if googled, it should be available to all. The price is Approx £10 for 500 ml & it goes quite a long way. I will finish by supplying the name & ingredient list & ask you to take note that the liquid is pretty strong & is also flammable, so please be careful. Used with caution, it has been nothing short of magic in our experience & if it does the same for even 1 of you guys, then posting my story here will have been so worthwhile. Good luck & love to you all. Please post if you have success - I'd love to hear about it!

And lastly, our water source, chemcial, bacteria ridden.... Look up the trailer to "Last Call at the Oasis". I bet if the other creatures on this planet could blog, they would be screaming bloody murder too. But who created this imbalance? Humans, that's who.
